After answering all of my questions, Chris asks, "where do you live in NC?" I explain a small town between Greensboro and Winston Salem. Now this whole time I could tell Chris was driving and whatever it was it sounded good. Chris tells me he's driving up from FL and actually he's just outside Charlotte heading to Raleigh/Cary area. How would you like to see the 757 in person. You gotta be $h!tting me. What transpires next is frankly a story I'll share with my Grandkids.........should I be lucky enough to have them someday.
Chris agrees to meet me at the Red Oak brewery outside Burlington, NC. After driving through some pretty terrible, driving rain, the sky brightens up the rain stops and most importantly the road is dry. (Important for later) I arrived 10 minutes before they (Chris and 28yr Callaway engineer Steve) did so I back my car in and wait. Shortly after, here she comes, a bright white, menacing, shark faced beast - headlights blazing and a custom D shaped exhaust burbling into the parking lot. It's a Z06/Z07 757 Callaway......a mouthful to say and an eyeful to behold.
After Chris walks me through the particulars of the upgrades, 2.3 PD blower, revised coolant flow, auxiliary coolers, CAI, stainless exhaust, dash plaque, sill guards, etc. he asks "well, you wanna drive it?" Are you kidding me? I won't waste adjectives on getting in the car, strapping in, starting or exhaust note...although it's all badass Z06. The power.....well it's stupid fast. Steve stated the 757 had roughly 8-10% parasitic loss with the manual and it definitely felt like a 10.5 1/4 mile car. I had an SRT8 that ran 10.73's with a procharger and it didn't hit or more importantly pull like this 757 did.
On the outbound trip I short shifted the 1-2 and 2-3 gears to get a feel for the power delivery and the cars manners. It's flawless. Also wanted to see the road going out as I'd never been on it before. Coming back I was more agressive and shifted at redline on the 1-2 and 2-3 pull achieving license surrending speeds way faster than one could believe. Another note. The short shifter is just kickass. What a quality engineered piece. It is spring tensioned to align with the 3 gate. This makes the 2-3 shift when you're hustling the car an effortless, mistake-free flick of the wrist. Love it.....and frankly love the car.
So after 30 minutes of talking cars, test-driving and test-drooling the 757 we parted ways. On the way home I called Tom at Maculkin and finalized the deal on a 2016 Z06 M7 3LZ @ 20% OFF MSRP that will be shipped to Callaway for the 757 and short-shifter package. It should be in my garage by Labor Day weekend and I can't flippin' wait!
Thanks again to Chris and Steve from Callaway for going out of their way to convert another enthusiast over to their product.
Thanks to Tom from Maculkin for making this a pain-free transaction.
