The Monster Mile @ Dover Raceway

This is the way you spend a hot summer Saturday in Delaware.. A couple of weekends ago our local Corvette club was privileged to spend an early afternoon at the Nascar Monster Mile in Dover, De.. There were 28 of our vettes all in a row travelling around the track. We were led by a pace car driven by the track historian George Keller. George has never missed a race at Dover International Speedway since the track opened in 1969. Dover is a 1 mile track with 9 degree banking on the straightaways and 24 degree banking at the turns, which is very steep. We started off behind the pace car on the track apron at about 25 mph, then George moved us up on the track running about 50 mph. After a couple trips around the track, where we then became sorta comfortable, we started increasing our speed. George's pace car stayed out in front, but we kinda drifted back a bit to let the pace car get well out in front of us. Then one at a time we would let the ponies loose, entering the turns around 80 - 90 mph and exiting a bit faster, maybe more than just a bit.. What a thrill making the transition from the turns to the straightaways. We did a total of about 9 or 10 laps before George brought us in. Well, most of us anyway. No one wanted to exit the track. We were just having too much fun. George then took us on a short tour of the facility. Then to the media center to view a very interesting history of Dover Downs. Then George spent a good amount of time reminiscing about his years at the "Monster Mile". What an interesting fellow!! Can't wait for our next visit... For a recognized car club that has an interest in visiting Dover International Speedway, you can contact them at (302)883-6568. The track has an adjoining hotel and casino with good dining opportunities. What a great way to spend a day or two....
